Work Is Under Way On Second Quackenbush Parking Garage Mural

May 25, 2017

The Albany Parking Authority has teamed up with Albany Center Gallery and the Albany Barn once again, with support from several other partners, to create a second mural on downtown Albany’s Quackenbush Parking Garage. The original piece will fill the south wall and wrap around to the west. Last year, local artist Michael Conlin completed a mural on the garage’s north wall featuring colorful Eastern Bluebirds in flight, New York’s state bird.

Complemented by recent investments taking shape in downtown, these mural projects serve as a collaborative effort to create a welcoming gateway. As discussed in the Impact Downtown Albany strategic plan, public art is a critical component to making truly world-class gateways into Albany’s visitor destinations. It can also be used to tackle remaining walkability challenges.

The mural is being painted by internationally recognized muralist, Hellbent. When completed, the abstract art that was inspired by Albany’s history, architecture and Dutch roots will be 115 feet tall and 65 feet wide, covering all seven stories of the parking structure. Work began May 22 and will finish the following week.
