Topping off marks major Albany Capital Center construction milestone
August 1, 2016
Last week, Capitalize Albany Corporation joined the Albany Capital Center team, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and local officials for the Center’s topping off ceremony, marking the completion of the steel construction phase of the new convention center in downtown Albany. It’s a major construction milestone that exemplifies downtown Albany’s current momentum and complements Governor Cuomo’s initiatives currently strengthening downtowns across Upstate New York. Since breaking ground in March 2015, more than 120 construction workers have been employed to build the state-of-the-art facility. Already, 18 events estimated to generate $300,000 in revenue have booked space in the facility once it opens in March 2017.
It’s an exciting time for Albany and its downtown. Supported by the Impact Downtown Albany strategic plan, more than $250 million has recently been invested in the district. Two internationally recognized Marriott brand hotels recently opened their doors. Downtown is also the region’s newest neighborhood with 300 new apartment units and an additional 400 on the way. All of this is occurring ahead of the Capital Center’s opening, which is expected to bring approximately 100,000 visitors to downtown annually.
