Grant Research and Writing Student Internship: Summer 2016

Capitalize Albany Corporation is seeking a highly motivated, professional, responsible and enthusiastic student candidate for its 2016 Summer Internship in grant research and writing. In this training opportunity, the individual will be immersed in grant research and learning how to draft and produce grant proposals.  This internship will provide an opportunity for a student to expand upon their academic experience with real world experience in economic development grant research as well as experience in nonprofit and local public authority settings. The ideal candidate will learn from our team as we continue to pursue grant funding for our projects and administration.

The primary focus of the student internship will be for the research of applicable potential grant opportunities and instruction in how to establish an available grant resource guide.  A secondary focus will be learning how to draft letters of inquiry and grant proposals.  All skills learned and training provided will be transferable to any employer in the field.

A NYS local public authority and registered 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization implementing programs and resources to create, retain, and attract business in the City of Albany, New York.

Student Training Opportunities may include training and instruction in the following:

  • Research available and applicable grants through both the internet and communications with funding entities
  • Data compilation and time-lining for grant proposals
  • Research, retrieval and assembly of background material for grant proposals
  • Creation of an available grant resource guide (compilation of applicable grant resources into a comprehensive report)
  • Drafting of letters of inquiry and assisting with full grant proposals for submission
  • Other training opportunities, as available

Time Commitment

The student internship involves being in the Capitalize Albany Corporation office 10 hours a week for approximately two months at the Corporation’s office located at 21 Lodge Street in Downtown Albany.  Attendance at specific board meetings may also be included in the student internship for additional learning opportunities.  While the timeframe is flexible between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the desired dates of the program are May 31 – July 29, 2016.

Supervision

The Grant Research and Writing Intern will be trained, mentored, and supervised by a Capitalize Albany Corporation Senior Economic Developer II.

Qualifications and Skills

Intern must be a junior or senior level undergraduate or graduate student in a public administration, business administration, or communications major/program which leads to a degree, diploma or certificate. Intern will be required to provide a statement from his/her school, which attests that he or she is a student whose course of instruction leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.

  • Strong research and data analysis skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as interest and proficiency in research
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Strong customer service orientation, excellent phone manner, and professional email communication

Having reliable transportation is required. General knowledge of grant writing will be beneficial. Interest in economic development or not-for profit organizations will be beneficial.  There will be no monetary compensation nor employee benefits provided for the student internship, and selected candidates are not considered employees for minimum wage purposes. Capitalize Albany Corporation is happy to work with the candidate’s college or university to negotiate course credit.
