Research and Data Analysis Student Internship: Summer 2016
Capitalize Albany Corporation is seeking a highly motivated, professional, responsible and enthusiastic student candidate for its 2016 Summer Internship in research and data analysis. In this training opportunity, the individual will be immersed the field of economic development research and gain valuable hands-on experience in research design, execution and analysis. Student interns will work closely with the economic development team and learn how to shape, manage and grow a database of information about City of Albany business and development trends.
A catalyst for economic growth, Capitalize Albany Corporation facilitates transformational development projects, serving as the City of Albany’s economic development arm. A NYS local public authority and registered 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization implementing programs and resources to create, retain, and attract business in the City of Albany, New York.
Student Training Opportunities may include training and instruction in the following:
- Finding channels to access data related to identified research topics
- Research, retrieve and assemble background material for research projects
- Data compilation as well as preparation and organization of data for analysis
- Review and analysis of spreadsheets (using statistical methods) to find meaningful insight
- Development of summary reports, narratives and visualizations (charts and graphs)
- Instruction in file organization and spreadsheet development
- Other training opportunities, as available
Time Commitment
The student internship involves being in the Capitalize Albany Corporation office 10 hours a week for approximately two months at the Corporation’s office located at 21 Lodge Street in Downtown Albany. Attendance at specific board meetings may also be included in the student program for additional learning opportunities. While the timeframe is flexible between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the desired dates of the program are May 31, 2016 – July 29, 2016.
Supervision
The Research and Data Analysis Intern will be trained, mentored, and supervised by a Capitalize Albany Corporation Senior Economic Developer.
Qualifications and Skills
Intern must be a junior or senior level undergraduate or graduate student in a public administration, management, business administration, communications, economics, mathematics, statistics, political science, finance, or social sciences major/program which leads to a degree, diploma or certificate. Intern will be required to provide a statement from his/her school, which attests that he or she is a student whose course of instruction leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
- Strong time-management and organizational skills
- Strong customer service orientation, excellent phone manner, and professional email communication
Having reliable transportation is required. Interest in data analysis, as well as economic development or not-for profit organizations will be beneficial. There will be no monetary compensation nor employee benefits provided for the student internship, and selected candidates are not considered employees for minimum wage purposes. Capitalize Albany Corporation is happy to work with the candidate’s college or university to negotiate course credit.
