Albany Skyway Preliminary Design and Engineering Work Under Way
April 20, 2018
The Impact Downtown Albany strategic plan, the City’s comprehensive plan, LWRP and waterfront master plan show demand for, and an economic need to increase connections from downtown to the waterfront. With support from New York State, Governor Cuomo and the recently announced $3.1 million committed, Capitalize Albany Corporation and the Albany Skyway project team are actively working through the project’s feasibility, preliminary design and engineering. In April, a site and structural assessment on the future site of the Albany Skyway was conducted, the I-787 northbound exit ramp from Quay Street to Clinton Avenue. Below are a few of the incredible views from the future elevated linear park. Additional photos, and photos featuring 360 degree views are available on the Corporation’s Facebook page, and a video clip can be found below.
From today’s site assessment. An important part of the #Albany Skyway experience isn’t just what you’ll see, it’s also what you’ll hear. Not muffled by the sound of nearby traffic, take a look at an amazing view, but also listen for the wildlife. @AlbanyCityHall @discoveralbany pic.twitter.com/9BX5LKEvvU

An important goal as part of the site visit was to better understand and experience how the ramp would function as a linear park, and how initial community feedback could be addressed and incorporated into its design. In March Capitalize Albany Corporation kicked off the Albany Skyway project with a public event at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center in order to generate ideas to support the project’s initial design. An online survey is available for those interested in the Albany Skyway project. The survey’s feedback will complement the March 8 kick off event’s conversation and greatly assist the project team. Public engagement will continue with a project update and an event in May. If you haven’t already, please take the 10-question survey here.
With support from @NYGovCuomo, and the recently announced $3.1M committed, the future #AlbanySkyway will become a destination that enhances neighborhood connections to the Hudson, impacts sustainability and improves walkability & bikeability—driving further investment in #Albany. pic.twitter.com/x3r9UuLTpP
